Barry Sheene And Kenny Roberts Duel In Historic Grand Prix

1979 British Grand Prix: A Race for the Ages

Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts Duel in Historic Grand Prix

One of the closest races in Grand Prix history, the 500cc British Grand Prix held on August 12, 1979, is still remembered as one of the greatest.

Before 1977, the Isle of Man TT was the only British round of the FIM championship. However, after the 1976 race, the Isle of Man TT was removed from the calendar, and the British Grand Prix was installed in its place.

The 1979 British Grand Prix took place on the Silverstone circuit over the weekend of August 10-12. The race began with Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts, and Wil Hartog battling for the lead.

Sheene and Roberts ultimately emerged as the frontrunners, with their duel going down as one of the most iconic in Grand Prix history. The two riders fought tooth and nail for the entire race, with multiple lead changes and thrilling overtaking maneuvers.

In the end, Roberts crossed the finish line just 0.07 seconds ahead of Sheene, securing a narrow victory. The margin of victory was the smallest in 500cc Grand Prix history.
