Father of Red Sox Prospect Jay Groome Arrested on Drug and Weapons Charges
Jason Joseph Groome, father of top Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Jay Groome, has been arrested and charged with multiple drug and weapons offenses in New Jersey.
According to local authorities, the elder Groome was taken into custody on Wednesday after police executed a search warrant at his home in Toms River.
Law enforcement officials say that Groome is facing charges including possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, and possession of a weapon without a permit. He is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a bail hearing.
The arrest of Groome comes as a shock to many in the baseball community, as his son Jay is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Red Sox organization. The younger Groome was selected by the Red Sox with the 12th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.
It is unclear what impact, if any, the elder Groome's arrest will have on his son's career. The Red Sox have not yet commented on the situation.
